Newport can be heavily congested during peak months (June, July, August) and it's best if you can plan to see as much of the area as possible on foot, bicycle, scooter or by trolley. If you do plan on using your car, try to get out and see the sights early in the morning, before the traffic begins to get heavy, which is usually around 11 am.
One highly recommended idea is to park your car at the Visitor Information Center for the day. The daily parking fee is just $2.00 when you purchase a ticket or day pass to ride the RIPTA trolley / shuttle bus service. (The Visitor Information Center is located at 23 America's Cup Avenue). There are several other public parking lots that you can use as well.
Newport offers a myriad of tour options, which is another great way to get around and see the sights. Visitors can select from historic walking tours, scenic harbor tours and trolley tours. See "What To See & Do" for more information about tour opportunities in Newport, Rhode Island.
